5 Fun Bulletin Board Ideas for Winter
Back to school, autumn leaves, Thanksgiving and Christmas all easily lend themselves to wonderful themes, but what to do once those have passed and spring is months away? Invigorate your classroom this winter in color and pizzazz with some simple and fast designs. Start organizing your winter bulletin board decoration with the five good ideas below.
Everyone Is Unique
Students are unique. Each student has a wonderful personality, personal interests, goals and ideas. Why not highlight the differences in a positive light on a winter snowflake bulletin board. While educating children about how snow forms, what it is created from, and other fun facts have them cut out snowflakes from white colored paper. Once the snowflakes are cut, have the children write different things about themselves on the snowflakes. You can have them only list descriptive words on the cut-outs to educate them about adjectives. In order to liven up the white or light blue snowflakes you may want to use some sparkles, glitter, or tissue paper squares. After you are finished you can have the students sit on soft classroom rugs and share unique qualities about each other!
Who is Hibernating?
A “Who is Hibernating?” theme for your classroom bulletin board can be a great way to turn the bulletin board into a teaching tool by incorporating some easy science concepts. Using construction paper, cutout or draw a bunch of animals that hibernate during the winter. If an interactive bulletin board is needed, put the animal on one side of the bulletin board labeled with numbers and the location where they hybernate (i.e. – hole in a tree, cave, nest, etc.) on the opposite side. Use see thru pockets and small number cards that correspond to each animal for the students to match the animal to the correct hideaway.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday is in the middle of January and there is always discussion of diversity and equality around this time. With a bulletin board background of stark white paper place traced and cut-out hand prints of a bunch of different colors all over the board. Make sure you have the children trace both of their hands onto the construction paper. On the hands the students can write, “Acceptance Starts With Me,” “Tolerance Begins Here,” or another similar slogan to address the issue of accepting diversity. Not only does this bulletin board teach a good lesson about acceptance and tolerance, it also can lead to a discussion about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and purpose.
Celebrate the 100th Day!
Normally, the 100th day of school is during the months of winter. This celebration of the power of ten provides a wonderful opportunity to integrate mathematics into the classroom bulletin board. Displaying sets of 100 items like pencils, gumdrops, erasers, or popsicle sticks make for a quick visual lesson. Using those kinds of decorations can also create a very colorful and pretty display!
The Heart of Valentine’s Day
This year why not do something a little bit different for Valentine’s Day and make the bulletin board an actual heart? This teaching board will help with lessons on general health, exercise, and circulation. To tie it in with the holiday, have the children write and post what they like about their heart on paper heart cutouts.
